Summer is here and if you’re one of the many Americans who work in construction, manufacturing, or garages, you’ll want to keep yourself and employees cool until fall rolls around. Dozens of workers die from heat related illness with 40% occurring in the construction industry. Water, rest, and shade can keep your workers cool and heat illness free. Allowing workers to acclimate to the changing temperature will also prevent heat related illness. Here are some alternative ways to keep workers cool during summer heat.
Train workers on how to respond to heat related emergencies.
Give your workers cool down times of no less than 5 minutes
Initiate high heat procedures if the temperature rises above 95 degrees
Give employees access to cool water at all times
Download OSHA’s heat safety app to predict when heat related injuries may occur
Purchase one or many high powered shop fans to keep air moving
Upgrade your ventilation system so that heat dissipates and keeps it out of your facility
Declutter your workspace so it doesn’t obstruct airflow
Consider cooling liners for hard hats
Offer cold rags for workers to wear around their neck and head
Treat workers with popsicles throughout their shifts
